2009 ‘Rethink drink’ Australian Senior National Championships

Victoria is once again at the forefront of Handball in Australia after a phenomenal performance at the 2009 Senior National Championships. Congratulations to the Victorian women’s team on taking out the title and to the men’s team who were respectable runners up.

The Championships were held at West Arena Joondalup in Western Australia from October 16th to 18th. The Championships saw the inclusion of the following states in both the men’s and women’s competition: Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, Australian Capital Territory and Victoria.

The three day event was jam packed with terrific handball games; some extremely close, others not so close, but all hard fought and a great spectacle.

The final day saw the Victorian men’s and women’s team both in the grand final. The women’s game was first, and after the disappointing result last year, the Victorian women had victory and revenge in their sites from the first throw off. At half time the score was New South Wales 6 – Victoria 9. The second half saw the two teams go goal for goal, see-sawing all the way to the finish. Full Time Score: New South Wales 14 – Victoria 18.

It was a sweet victory and reward for the hard work and team spirit shown not only at the Championships but throughout the year. Thanks to everyone for their efforts!.

After the thrilling final match between Victoria and New South Wales women’s teams, it was over to their male counterparts to be on centre court for the men’s final match.

The men’s team did very well to get to nationals and more importantly make the finals as the team was mixed with some very experienced players and players that had only been playing handball a few months. The mix in the end was a great balance with the new players stepping up to their more experienced players. The game was close throughout the first half and at half time the score was Victoria 13 – New South Wales 13. The second half saw the men fight hard however NSW got away in the end with the final score: Victoria 28 – New South Wales 32

Congratulations to the Victorian Men’s team on 2nd place, the hard work on court was a great effort, and just missing out on the title. Next year boys!

The results of both teams’ shows we are still a strong handball state that we hope to build on this for next years nationals to be hosted by Handball Victoria.

Again a big thank you to Handball West for a successful and well organized event. We have a lot to live up to for next year’s 2010 senior nationals.

2009 Victoria Vase – Spring Competition Results

The ‘best of the two’ game finals were played between Glory and Power from the Melbourne Handball Club. After a close first game, ‘Power’ was one game and goal up on their competition: Power (15) MHC Glory (14). The second week of finals was again a close game with ‘Power’ winning (16) - (13). Monash was third in the competition.

All teams played well and had some very close games throughout the season. Next year aims to be a bigger and stronger competition with interest from additional women’s teams to enter the competition.

Congratulations to both MHC teams for making the finals and well done MHC Power on their victory in the 2009 Victoria Vase, Spring Competition.
